The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced new guidelines for Terminal Semester and Intermediate Semester exam 2020 today. In a press note issued here on April 29, 2020, UGC stated that Terminal semester exams would be held in July month and that intermediate semester grades will be provided on the basis of internal assessment only on containment zones. Here are the highlights from UGC guidelines for University and college semester exams, for the academic calendar starting 2020 and thereon.
Latest News: The UGC guidelines on semester exams and academic calendar related activities for university and colleges was released in the presence of Sri Ramesh Pokhriyal, MHRD minister. The UGC also noted that a COVID 19 panel will be constituted in every university with power to resolve students’ exams and academic calendar related issues. Apart from that, a central COVID 19 cell will also be formed at UGC for faster decision making about the university/college semester exam and academic activities.
UGC guidelines for Exam 2020:
Terminal semester: Terminal semester exams will be held in July month for all university. Terminal semester meaning, the last semester of a course. The rule also applies to final year’s exams for all courses, which are considered as terminal semester. Pending semester exams will be held in July in non-containment zones.
Intermediate semester: Intermediate semester grading will be done on the basis of internal assessment in previous and next semester. Intermediate semester meaning the semester other than last or first. For example, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 7th semester. However, Intermediate semester exams would only be conducted in the universities outside containment zones.
What it means for the students: Students currently in last semester ( all courses) will have to take exams in July month. Yes, that includes supplementary/reappear/arrear exams.
As for the students in middle semesters (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th semester) of any course (2 year courses, 3 year degree courses, 4 year B.tech/professional degree courses, 5 year integrated courses), the exams will only be held in areas/regions/states that are not in containment zone. The list of containment zones are released state-wise and is updated frequently depending on the COVID 19 pandemic situation in that region. Keep check of the local state news or government websites for knowing about that.
The best way for the students to know what’s happening with college/university semester exams and academic calendar, is to inquire with your University/College and keep checking their official portals.
