The salary of the Indian Coast Guard Navik GD & BD upon joining will be Rs 21,700/-, and Rs 29,200/- for Yantrik. As the official notification states, the Navik GD & DB salary comes under pay scale 3 of the 7th CPC while Yantrik salary comes under Pay Scale 5.

However, since India Coast Guard has already notified the exact basic pay, it’s not confirmed if that includes grade pay or will it be added to the basic pay.

On top of the basic pay of Rs 21,800/-, the Navik GD job holders are eligible for Dearness and other allowances based on the nature of the duty and the place where Navik is posted. Yantrik too get all prescribed allowances in addition to Yantrik pay of Rs 6,200/-.

Indian Coast Guard employees don’t get the MSP (which is approx. Rs 6000/- per month) which Indian Navy candidates receive.

Coast Guard Naviks come under National Pension scheme unlike Indian Navy.

Job Profile (Duty)

The job/work profile of a Navik (General Duty) is fairly simple and aligns with the duties of Indian Coast Guard as whole but the life as a Navik is of demanding nature. Apart from the official description of the ICG work profile, here is realistic picture:

After the completion of training, Naviks are posted to one of the Coast Guard ships and most of the service time is spent aboard. The ships sail for a stretch of 10-15 days twice or thrice a month in mainly coastal areas. While at harbor, Navik’s will have to be on day duty everyday and night duty once a week.

Navik GDs are allowed 45 days’ leave in year and 08 days’ casual leave.

Promotion/ Career Growth

Navik (General Duty) and Yantrik can be promoted up to the post of Pradhan Adhikari/ Pradhan Sahayak in the Indian Coast Guard. However, the promotion to the officer cadre is subjected to the suitability and performance of the candidate. The salary/pay scale for the rank of Pradhan Adhikari is Rs 47,600/- (Pay level 8) + Yantrik pay (Rs 6,200/-) with Dearness allowance.

After qualifying the exams and being selected, Navik (General Duty) are trained at INS Chilka 24 weeks. After the branch allocation, Naviks are deputed for training at sea (afloat training) for a duration of 3 months followed by cadre training. This training’s duration varies from cadre to cadre with 4-6 months.
